“If Logan had been emotionally vulnerable with Mattie at all, this would have been a slam dunk five star. The book had all of the things that usually work for me. Hurt/comfort, us against everyone, fake dating turning into real feelings, etc. I was actually taken off guard the first time one of them said I love you for real in this book. I didn't get the vibe that we were missing their off page interactions so we saw their entire relationship unfold. I just didn't buy feelings at all.
I did love the mixed media part of this. I listened to the audiobook and loved the twitter/tabloid/memoir parts interspersed. It was kind of a gut punch to see how much the mains were struggling paired with the cruelty of strangers. Logan was just assaulted and basically catatonic about it and random strangers were encouraging him to take himself out. It was horrible and on par with anyone who had a twitter account ever.
Thank you to Libro FM and Netgalley for a copy in exchange for an honest review.”

“WHEW, this book is heavy! based on the summary, i thought i’d be reading a fake-dating rom com based in hollywood. this is so much more than that, though (not that there’s anything wrong with a rom com). it follows logan and mattie, two actors who are playing love interests in a movie. the production company wants them to pretend to date to get more attention for the movie.
it starts out as a typical grumpy/sunshine fake-dating scenario. but there is so much more to both of these characters’ stories. mattie’s dad won’t talk to him because he’s gay, and that’s something he’s struggled with in being confident as an out gay man. logan’s dad hates that he’s bisexual, and he has played into the role of the “slutty bad boy” to deal with the fact that he thinks everyone hates who he is.
i am so moved by this story. logan and mattie are two wonderful characters in this sad but beautiful book. kacen callender is an incredible writer, especially with this being their first adult novel!”

“There is so much I can say about this book, and it’s very hard to condense all of my thoughts into one cohesive, comprehensive and understanding review, but I will try!
This is a unique queer romance set in the backdrop of Hollywood where many deep, potentially triggering topics are discussed and explored. I appreciate the depth that the book went into, but not everyone will, so please prepare yourself by checking trigger warnings beforehand. Back to the review!
I really heavily disliked that Mattie had a huge saviour complex. Very very minor spoiler, but it does get briefly addressed in the end, but it really solidified the role of the “perfect” MC. The later chapters try to “reveal” Mattie’s flaws, but they all just lead back to him being ultimately the perfect human. Even his “flaws” emphasize his perfection, if that makes sense. On the other hand, I did really enjoy the realism of Logan’s flaws stemming from his trauma. He didn’t magically overcome his mental illness because of love, which is so common in romance books attempting to add mental health rep. Well done to the author in that sense.
I wasn’t entirely convinced of the chemistry in the book. It was kind of insta-love-y, despite the MCs hating each other first- they went from hate to love so fast. That again just solidifies how “perfect” Mattie was made to be. He looked past every flaw that Logan had and loved him regardless, which was wonderful to read in a romance novel but is just not realistic. I would have loved the initial romance to have taken its time instead of stemming from Mattie’s saviour complex and give him a flaw or two that didn’t stem from other people (ie his dad).
I almost loved the realistic ending, I know many people won’t love the ending but I found it ALMOST fitting for them. I can’t put my finger on what I didn’t love about it, but it felt too perfect, even though the one MC still had his “flaws” (for lack of a better word). But, and no spoilers, the growth of both of the MCs was satisfying and a very healthy projection of mental health growth.
I loved the consent in this book. It’s so important to see explicit consent in romance books, not just for sex but for anything in the story. The consent was done very well in this book.
I do recommend this book, as long as you check trigger warnings beforehand. It’s a compelling romance that deserves attention, despite a few flaws.
Thank you to Grand Central Publishing and Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. All opinions are my own.”
