Starfish

By Peter Watts
Starfish by Peter Watts digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

A huge international corporation has developed a facility along the Juan de Fuca Ridge at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean to exploit geothermal power. They send a bio-engineered crew--people who have been altered to withstand the pressure and breathe the seawater--down to live and work in this weird, fertile undersea darkness.

Unfortunately the only people suitable for long-term employment in these experimental power stations are crazy, some of them in unpleasant ways. How many of them can survive, or will be allowed to survive, while worldwide disaster approaches from below?

Starfish, the first installment in Peter Watts' Rifters Trilogy

“This is a weird one. Sci-fi, with a touch of the dystopian, and with several generous dabs of unsettling dread that you find in the horror genre. I loved the setting, liked the characters interactions with one another, and remain curious about how the world is torpedoed from here as a result of events in this installment. I will be exploring more from this author.”
Thinking Face“A fun, if dark book with some cool ideas and dated social terminology. Good sci-fi, but not great sci-fi. Entertaining enough to be a brisk read and enough of a hook to probably pick up the rest of the series at some point, but not thoughtful enough to leave a lasting impact that will leave me mulling over the events within it's pages or the ideas presented.”
