Star Wars: Temptation of the Force (The High Republic) by Tessa Gratton digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

The reunited Jedi prepare to strike back against the ruthless Nihil in this thrilling sequel to Star Wars: The Eye of Darkness.

For over a year, Jedi Masters Avar Kriss and Elzar Mann were kept apart by the Nihil’s Stormwall. After Avar makes a daring escape from inside the Occlusion Zone, the star-crossed Jedi are reunited. But while the physical distance between them has evaporated, their shared grief over their failure to protect the galaxy from the Nihil threat remains.

To rally the Jedi Order and the Republic, Avar and Elzar cling to their belief in serving Light and Life. Together, they lead a daring mission into Nihil space to liberate the planet of Naboo and show those trapped behind the Stormwall that the Jedi will never abandon them. Now back within close orbit of each other, the two Jedi Masters can no longer deny the bond that has always drawn them back together and made them stronger.

After finally embracing their true desires and imbued with renewed purpose, Avar and Elzar devise a plan to turn the tide of the conflict with the Nihil once and for all. Accompanied by Jedi Knights Bell Zettifar, Burryaga, and Vernestra Rwoh, the Jedi begin their hunt for Marchion Ro. But to seek out the Nihil’s dangerous leader, the Jedi will have to survive the Nameless terrors that thus far they have been powerless to stop.

Surprised Face with Open Mouth“First off, I truly enjoyed this book. The overall story was amazing and I was not disappointed with it as the next installment of the continuing story. Ro continues to be a fantastic villain. I loved the dynamic between Xylan and Cair (it humanizes Xylan). Porter and Viess' conflict is BRILLIANT! Absolutely adored Avar in this. This actually made me like Elzar. However, the major flaw in this novel (and why it only got a solid four stars) is the romance between Elzar and Avar. Since Light of the Jedi, we knew Elzar had romantic interests in Avar, and we knew Avar shot him down repeatedly (though it seems to imply they may have had a few trysts as Padawans) since becoming Jedi Knights. Then Avar's phase 1 story gets sideline to the comics — having read the comics, she is NOT pining for Elzar at any point. She is 100% focused on defeating the Drengir and the Nihil. This hinders the romance in phase 3 because Avar is never given a moment to think about Elzar. Even in Eye of Darkness, her quiet moments are more introspective and about her failures than how much she wants to jump Elzar's bones. Meanwhile, Elzar pining DESPERATELY for Avar. The only moment Avar gets for Elzar is when Avar hears his messages and cries. But that can be easily explained by the fact she's fucking lonely and trapped behind the Stormwall. Temptation of the Force, tries to act as if the previous writers did the emotional leg work for Avar, when they didn't. So it comes feeling off kilter and a bit out of nowhere. So sadly, I am not shipping Elvar. I prefer Lourna/Avar (I like my lesbians cunty bitches that keep having the same knife fight). Another nit that I must pick is that Avar is never forced to confront what she did to Lourna (i.e.: cut off Lourna's hand and almost kill her [thanks Keeve for stopping that!]) Meanwhile, Elzar's arc in this book is coming to terms with himself over killing Chancey Yarrow. I support women's rights as well as their wrongs. Acknowledge Avar's wrongs! Let my girl be flawed! Let her be imperfect! It's not right that only men get to be flawed and need to do some soul searching. In conclusion it was great but failed on the romance that was promised. Edit: This is so far my favorite book in the series. Largely because there is so much Avar. Avar is my favorite character.”
