“This was an interesting read for me. I love sci-fi books and thought one from the 60's would be good as there are loads from that time that were very popular. This one however had some things that annoyed me. It's set in a distant planetary system with later generations of humans living among aliens etc, however the author changes some words for everyday items and doesn't exactly explain what they are, leaving it down to the reader to work it out. 'Gentlehomo' instead of gentleman for instance although I get it's a hybrid of 'gentleman' and 'homosapien' it just sounds weird to me. Raytube I can only assume is a ray gun or fire lance of some sort? Flitter for an atmospheric craft, spacer for a spaceship makes sense however... But despite the author's literary choices I found the premise intriguing. It starts out as a con, then when they encounter an alien intelligence on a planet where there shouldnt be any, it becomes survival. Then at the very end a plot twist that changes the whole narrative and leaves an ambiguous but happy-ish ending for the main two characters. I can't say i would read this again but I am glad that I have experienced it once. A fun read when you get past the wording choices 🙂”
“If Asimov is Kubrick, and Heinlein and Clarke are Spielberg…then I am starting to think Andre Norton is a bit Saturday Morning cartoon (is that still a thing)? Meaning Star Hunter has some moments of fun, but it is ultimately throwaway. About a man who is a grizzled veteran for hunting alien lifeforms on newly discovered, colonizable planets. Until he learns his partner in crime is not quite who he says he is, and there is a bit of a conspiracy rumbling beneath the surface. It is a bit spoilery, but the only thing I can say to grab your interest is that it has themes similar to Duncan Jones’s MOON. I’ll completely forget about this in a week, but it wasnt terrible.”
