“What a terribly relevant story about a 17 year old Black boy being shot to death for simply being in a car with his white girlfriend in front of the wrong house. This book challenges the “stand your ground” laws that allow Americans to literally get away with murder. It confronts racism and bias and shines a spotlight on how Black families’ worst moments get exploited to make the victim look like a “thug” who “deserved what he got.”
Told from two women’s perspectives: the mother of the murdered boy and the wife of the man who shot him, this book dug into feelings of helplessness and fear. The writing made the characters feel a bit distant to me, but their stories and experiences were compelling.
I like that the author focused on humanity and healing and the obstacles to those things. Overall, it was really well done and an important read.”
