Spy Glass Reviews

3.5
“Maria, I love you, I love everything you write, including this book, but I really hated the ending. Like so. Much. But please, let me explain! I did write a previous review for this book, but it was written almost immediately after finishing it, in the heat of the moment, and was filled with negative energy. Though I did try to balance the hate I was feeling toward the ending with respect for Maria and her writing, it's bugged me ever since that it was so negative, because I actually did really like the book as a whole. So I've rewritten my review. It is the first book review I've ever written outside of a middle school English class, so if it sucks, sorry not sorry. I LOVE the Chronicles of Ixia. I read the Study books awhile ago, and when I figured out that I should really read the Glass books before moving onto Shadow Study, I immediately got a hold of them and ate the first two up. The day I started Spy Glass I remember wishing Opal's story would never end, because I truly loved living in her world. I was dreading the end of this book in a way that felt like the heartache that comes with saying goodbye to an old friend. Book lovers, you know what I'm talking about. Before I go on, I do want to say that the book is so good, and I mean that. In true Maria fashion, there is rarely a lull in action for very long. It's sweet, it's funny, it's exciting, it's heart-breaking, it's empowering, it's touching, it's all the feels, and of course, it's impossible to put down. It's just the ending I took issue with. Endings are so important to me. I think it's because saying goodbye is one of my least favorite things and I very much dislike change, so I'm always wary of last books and rarely truly satisfied. They're make or break in my mind, which is why I've rated it only 3 stars. Maria does a lovely job of tying up just the right amount of loose ends to be satisfying, but at the same time leave you ready to do just about anything to get your hands on the next one. So let me make this clear: this book does not have a bad ending, it is satisfying in the worst way and it does make sense she said begrudgingly. I just really, really didn't like it. I think the reason why I feel so passionately about this is because 1) I really truly love these books, and 2)... I know I'm not the only one that's ever felt betrayed by a book, but that's not a bad thing. All it means is that you truly fell into the world and fell so deeply in love with the characters and their story, you can't help but feel passionately. I obviously feel that way about this book, and all of the Glass and Study books, and would recommend them to anyone. It's the mark of a great author to make you feel so deeply about their writing. If for some reason you're reading this review still deciding whether or not to pick up Spy Glass, or any of Maria's books, DO IT. I promise you, you'll fall just as deeply into the world as I did and you will not regret it. Well, you may feel the same about the ending as I do, but you cannot deny that Maria writes a damn good book. Maria, you're amazing and I cannot wait to see where The Chronicles of Ixia take us to next!”
