Spinning Silver
By Naomi NovikPublisher Description
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “One of the year’s strongest fantasy novels” (NPR), an imaginative retelling of the Rumpelstiltskin fairy tale from the bestselling author of Uprooted.
NEBULA AND HUGO AWARD FINALIST • NAMED ONE OF PASTE’S BEST FANTASY BOOKS OF THE DECADE • ONE OF THE TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The New York Public Library
With the Nebula Award–winning Uprooted, Naomi Novik opened a brilliant new chapter in an already acclaimed career, delving into the magic of fairy tales to craft a love story that was both timeless and utterly of the now. Spinning Silver draws readers deeper into this glittering realm of fantasy, where the boundary between wonder and terror is thinner than a breath, and safety can be stolen as quickly as a kiss.
Miryem is the daughter and granddaughter of moneylenders, but her father’s inability to collect his debts has left his family on the edge of poverty—until Miryem takes matters into her own hands. Hardening her heart, the young woman sets out to claim what is owed and soon gains a reputation for being able to turn silver into gold. When an ill-advised boast draws the attention of the king of the Staryk—grim fey creatures who seem more ice than flesh—Miryem’s fate, and that of two kingdoms, will be forever altered. She will face an impossible challenge and, along with two unlikely allies, uncover a secret that threatens to consume the lands of humans and Staryk alike.

“Gorgeous, complex, and magical . . . This is the kind of book that one might wish to inhabit forever.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)
“Cool and clever and . . . dire and wonderful.”—Laini Taylor, author of Strange the Dreamer

“Perfect blend of genres. Historical fiction, fantasy, and adventure. I don't normally like 'girl friend' books because I find the relationships between the women unrealistic but Novik does a masterful job. They take care of each without being overly close and mushy. Great for anyone wanting a break from romantasy. I think historical fiction readers will especially like the realistic settings and attitudes. Would highly recommend for Teen girls.”

“So idek what to say. I feel bad cause objectively it’s a good book. But was it enjoyable? Eh no. Why was Wanda there. Why was the grandma there. I don’t know! Also, how were there 3.5 marriages and not one snippet of romance. Whyyy! This kinda felt like a Stephanie garber book but more serious and solemn and the excitement taken out. Idk maybe that’s judgy but I realize I like books based on how much I want to read them and not how good their writing and messages of the story are lol. Anyway thank you Naomi, I will now be moving on 🫶🏼🫶🏼”

“I enjoyed this book a lot. It was engaging and interesting, and the character development was strong. Our three main narrators are strong, independent women with complex perspectives and motivations. I found each compelling in their own way, but especially liked Miryem. The narration was somewhat complicated by three addition narrators. I didn’t necessarily dislike the addition narrators, and found that in some ways their perspectives added to the richness of the setting and story, but their sections also made continuity somewhat more challenging. I also found some of the magical elements somewhat difficult to understand and follow - I took on an accept-at-face-value mindset which helped. This is not a romance, though there are some romance elements present. I think those who read romamtacy type stories will enjoy this one, too.”
