Surprised Face with Open Mouth“AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH What can I really say about this book? What could I not say? Honestly this is one of the most intense books I have ever read. I was left knawing at the bars of my enclosure every time I had to step away from this book to actually do my job. This story is not a love story. It is full of war and plotting and so much death. The ideals of human nature and the value people place in different people/places is what truly shines through in this tale. It is a story of strategy, of chance, of all the what ifs and possibilities that come with life and the decisions we make. It puts one person/god in charge of fate. Or more accurately, one person/god takes charge of fate even if it means giving up her own existence. I could have never guessed the a young adult fantasy novel would grip me as much as this one did. That being said, I wish this were a romance, but that would be unfair to the story and characters as a whole. Which is why I’m so so happy we got a “not-quite-canon” bonus chapter from the author. Ugh I will never be over this duology. Explanation for why I can’t give this book 5 stars…. Honestly it’s just because I got overstimulated sometimes lol there is no fluff in this book it is all brutal reality. Thus, reading the second book without the whole crowxzephyr angst and few fluffy moments in the first book, it just took me a bit of time to get my brain back on track.”

About Joan He

Joan He was born and raised in Philadelphia but still, on occasion, loses her way. At a young age, she received classical instruction in oil painting before discovering that stories are her favorite kind of art. She studied psychology and Chinese history at the University of Pennsylvania and now writes from Chicago. She is the bestselling author of The Ones We're Meant to Find, and Descendant of the Crane, her young adult debut novel. Sound the Gong is the second book in her Kingdom of Three duology, following Strike the Zither.
