Song of the Abyss by Makiia Lucier digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Ancient grievances, long-held grudges, and dangerous magic combine in this sweeping fantasy perfect for fans of Tamora Pierce and Rachel Hartman.

As the granddaughter of a famed navigator, seventeen-year-old Reyna has always lived life on her own terms, despite those who say a girl could never be an explorer for the royal house of St. John del Mar. She is determined to prove them wrong, and as she returns home after a year-long expedition, she knows her dream is within reach. No longer an apprentice, instead: Reyna, Master Explorer. But when menacing raiders attack her ship, those dreams are pushed aside. Reyna’s escape is both desperate and dangerous, and when next she sees her ship, a mystery rises from the deep. The sailors—her captain, her countrymen—have vanished. To find them, Reyna must use every resource at her disposal . . . including placing her trust in a handsome prince from a rival kingdom. Together they uncover a disturbing truth. The attack was no isolated incident. Troubling signs point to a shadowy kingdom in the north, and for once, the rulers of the Sea of Magdalen agree: something must be done. But can Reyna be brave enough to find a way?

“I LOVED this book. This is the second in a duology, and I would definitively say this one is my favorite of the two. The first book ‘Isle of Blood and Stone’ I liked very much as well. However, I did enjoy this one a bit more, I really loved the characters and the story. The world is fantastic and I definitely recommend reading the first book to have an already established view of the world and some of the characters. Though, this can be read alone. But you should really read the first one too, it’s very good. (and there is more of Ulises, who is my favorite) I have just one complaint. I loved the epilogue in ‘Isle of Blood and Stone’. There were no plot holes and it wrapped up everything very nicely. However, this book’s “epilogue” of sorts, felt a bit rushed. It wrapped a good amount of stuff up but I wish we could’ve learned at least what happened with a certain character/characters (look below if you dare). #spoilers# (ish) We did not see or hear if Mercedes and her baby were ok!!! So I’ll assume she is, but we left her in not-so-good health! And what about Blaise’s mother? And I would’ve really liked to see the reunion back on Del-Mar. Though, with the culture of these kingdoms in the book, I do think it makes sense that they would not all go back right away. Mainly, I just want to know if Mercedes and the baby are ok. 😞 Anyways, these ultimately didn’t sway my opinion that much, for I clearly still gave it 5 stars.”
Smiling Face with Heart-Eyes“If there were a 1000 books in this world with these characters I would read them all. They aren’t complex books, there isn’t intense world building, but the characters and the plots are perfectly written. The book is well paced and my goodness I couldn’t get enough of Reyna, Blaise and Levi. I want so many more adventures and expeditions in this world. I hope this isn’t meant to end as a duology, it’d break my heart.”
