Song of Solomon

By Toni Morrison
Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • An official Oprah Winfrey’s “The Books That Help Me Through” selection • The acclaimed Nobel Prize winner transfigures the coming-of-age story with this brilliantly imagined novel. Includes a new foreword by the author.

One of The Atlantic’s Great American Novels of the Past 100 Years

Milkman Dead was born shortly after a neighborhood eccentric hurled himself off a rooftop in a vain attempt at flight. For the rest of his life he, too, will be trying to fly. As Morrison follows Milkman from his rustbelt city to the place of his family’s origins, she introduces an entire cast of strivers and seeresses, liars and assassins, the inhabitants of a fully realized Black world.

“Morrison moves easily in and out of the lives and thoughts of her characters, luxuriating in the diversity of circumstances and personality, and revelling in the sound of their voices and of her own, which echoes and elaborates theirs.” —The New Yorker

Thinking Face“This might be a book I need to sit and marinate on awhile and come back to later. It was very good but I feel like I haven't explored all its depth yet. There's definitely a lot of symbolism to the names. I'm trying to decide if the Biblical names are purposely ironic or not. While there's a lot I'm still processing, I do greatly appreciate the themes. Much about this story is quintessentially American, especially in how we treat people of color. The disconnection to different family members and lost and found heritage are a significant part of the backstory of many black Americans. But despite tremendous odds, Pilate never gave up her faith or focus on family. As an outlier of the community, I can only guess but I imagine this connection is why Christian faith is so strong among many so many black parishioners. If you've lost that connection to your bio family, you have to make your own instead.”

Thinking Face“Song of Solomon was my first reading of Toni Morrison and I loved it. This story has had me thinking for days as Morrison’s way of painting a picture of life and culture opened my eyes, heart and mind to areas I was perhaps ignorant of. I won’t spoil anything, but will say that this book is a must read and will recommend to everyone.”
