Somewhere Beneath Those Waves by Sarah Monette digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Monette's diverse collection delves deeply into the mythic and reaches far beyond everyday reality. Readers cannot resist journeying with her into realms—dangerously dark or illuminatingly revelatory—they could never imagine without her as their guide. From ghost stories in the tradition of M. R. James to darkly poetic tales to moving fictional examinations of the most basic of human emotion—fear, love, hate, loneliness—Monette's pen produces stories that are invariably unforgettable . . .

“One of my favorite short story collections, by a brilliantly original and talented writer. This volume has hardly got a weaker story in it, and several of them are in my list of the best stories I've read. Absolutely top tier. My personal favorite stories from this collection are: Draco Campestris - I think about this one often - it endlessly leaves me wanting more, in about a dozen different ways; Letters from a Teddy Bear on Valentine's Day, which is one of the most clear, clean, direct, heartbreaking stories I've ever read; Katabasis: Seraphic Trains - complex and complicated and clear, with more rich, interesting quirks that lead the attention into wondering; The Watcher in the Corners, which is dark and frightening and mysterious and spooky, and has 2 wonderful protagonists; Ashes, Ashes - which is scary and spooky and all atmosphere and dread; Three Letters from the Queen of Elfland, which manages within the confines of a brief tale to describe 2 love stories involving 3 parties and also everything wrong with "love" and indict an entire social structure; The Séance at Chisholm End, which is another spooky, atmospheric tale with 2 wonderful protagonists I also really liked A Night in Electric Squidland and Imposters, but I was getting perilously close to not making choices and instead just including everything. So I will just say that if you enjoy brilliant writing, incredible imagination, and speculative fiction and you can handle short stories - Read This Book!”
