Something More Than Night
ByPublisher Description
With his signature wit, the award-winning author of Anno Dracula, Kim Newman, reimagines the lives of Raymond Chandler and Boris Karloff in this daring and horrifying tale.
'If more mysteries were written like this, I’d read more mysteries.' - Grady Hendrix, author of The Final Girl Support Group
Hollywood, the late 1930s. Raymond Chandler writes detective stories for pulp magazines, and drinks more than he should. Boris Karloff plays monsters in the movies. Together, they investigate mysterious matters in a town run by human and inhuman monsters.
Joh Devlin, an investigator for the DA’s office who scores high on insubordination, enlists the pair to work a case that threatens to expose Hollywood’s most horrific secrets. Together they will find out more than they should about the way this town works. And about each other. And, oh yes, monsters aren’t just for the movies.

“This is so frustratingly between a 3-star and a 4-star read! It's a 3.5 star and won't shift either direction.
Here's what was 4-star worthy:
- a plot that's a Venn diagram of hard-boiled noir, seedy underbelly of Hollywoodland, and supernatural things that the average person is blissfully unaware of but with whom the protagonists must deal to their peril
- great characters based on real life Raymond Chandler and Billy Pratt (better known by his stage name, Boris Karloff). I would read more based on them, even thought the friendship presented in the book is, by the author's admission, likely entirely fictional and speculative.
- a great reason why someone would have a hair-covering-one-eye hairstyle like Veronica Lake (who isn't in the book but was famous for this kind of hairstyle). If you're going to give up depth perception for fashion, you should have a compelling reason behind it!
Now the 3-star elements:
- sometimes got confusing by the timeline jumping around a bit much for me and too many balls plot-wise juggled in the air (this may partly be because I read it while in the late-winter blahs and also over the switch to Daylight Savings Time, which knocks me for a loop every time)
If you're willing to spend some of your reading time confused as to what exactly is going on, there is a lot to like in this book.”
