Some Luck
By Jane SmileyPublisher Description
NATIONAL BESTSELLER • NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST • From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of A Thousand Acres comes the first volume of an epic trilogy that takes us on a literary adventure through cycles of birth and death, passion and betrayal that will span a century in America.
“Intimate.... Miraculous.... Staggering.... A masterpiece in the making.” —USA Today
1920, Denby, Iowa: Rosanna and Walter Langdon have just welcomed their firstborn son, Frank, into their family farm. He will be the oldest of five.
Each chapter in this extraordinary novel covers a single year, encompassing the sweep of history as the Langdons abide by time-honored values and pass them on to their children. With the country on the cusp of enormous social and economic change through the early 1950s, we watch as the personal and the historical merge seamlessly: one moment electricity is just beginning to power the farm, and the next a son is volunteering to fight the Nazis. Later still, a girl we’d seen growing up now has a little girl of her own.

“4,5
I loved this slow but beautiful book. An epic story that follows a family from the 20s to the 50s.
I was a bit scared to be bored but once I passed 150 pages, I couldn’t stop. I will be reading the rest ! This is the type of familia saga that I love and crave, even more so when the writing style is so exquisitely subtle.”

“And then that was over and he had the influenza on his way home, in Georgia, and he recovered, and Howard, on the farm with his parents, did not, though his mother did, and over the years she had said more than once, "It should have been me that died," at which point his father would leave the room and his mother would put her face in her hands. The only thing Walter knew to do was to pat her on the knee.
The beginning of what I know will be an incredible saga.
Smiley does an amazing job of making every character there own person. Even siblings that may be similar are hardly the same. I also loved the style of writing. Each chapter being a vignette for the year is really charming. Seeing how the characters grow and change along with the time is fantastic. From Walter using a pair of horses to farm around 40 acres, to the Joe and his tractor doing nearly 800 is just mind blowing.
I'm excited to see how the family continues to grow over the next two books.”
