“So much better paced than the last book in the series, each chapter was carefully crafted to keep me wanting to know more. This one takes a much more historical fiction based plot, focusing on the non-violence movement led by Indian leaders, specifically during and after WWI. Interesting for this plot was the moral issues that Wyndham has to face in trying to solve crimes during this period, becoming a much more complex character as the series continues on.
“It struck me that was the real problem. To see a man as your enemy, you needed to hate him, and while it was easy to hate a man who fought you with bullets and bombs, it was bloody difficult to hate a man who opposed you by appealing to your own moral compass.”
Mukherjee is such a Scottish-Indian talent in crime writing, these books feel very fresh to the genre.”

Abir Mukherjee is the author of the award-winning Wyndham & Banerjee series of crime novels set in Raj-era India. He has won the CWA Historical Dagger and the Wilbur Smith Award for Adventure Writing, and has been shortlisted for the CWA Gold Dagger, the HWA Gold Crown, and the Edgar Allan Poe Award.
