It is 1985 in a small Irish town. During the weeks leading up to Christmas, Bill Furlong, a coal merchant and family man faces into his busiest season. Early one morning, while delivering an order to the local convent, Bill makes a discovery which forces him to confront both his past and the complicit silences of a town controlled by the church.

An international bestseller, Small Things Like These is a deeply affecting story of hope, quiet heroism, and empathy from one of our most critically lauded and iconic writers.

“This novella is quietly atmospheric, it felt as though everything was coated in a peaceful blanket of snow. Furlong’s perspective was reflective and poignant. The women in his life made him who he was — “I took my mother’s name — and never any harm did it do to me.” Even though he was a bit unhappy or perhaps just melancholic, you could tell his relationship with his mother and his entire family of girls, was important to him and ultimately led him to pay forward kindness and empathy to another woman in need. The same grace given to his own mother by Mrs. Wilson. “What have I against girls? My own mother was a girl, once. And I dare say the same must be true of you and all belonging to us” (70). And someone get this man a jigsaw puzzle 🫶🏻”
