Passeron focuses on the experts in retrovirology—Luc Montagnier, Françoise Barré-Sinoussi, and their colleagues—who discovered evidence of a retrovirus that was eventually named human immunodeficiency virus.

“The pace of the book is kept well, balancing short chapters of scientific talk with short chapters of "the story". I did find some of it quite difficult to get into, perhaps due to translation but it felt quite dry at times. The story is compelling though and I came to love the family, they demonstrate such strength and resilience.”
