“I enjoyed the fact that this story incorporated slightly supernatural elements along with the usual mystery and mayhem. Loved the setting and the vibes and found myself liking the characters far more than I had anticipated I would.”
“I honestly did not know how to rate this book. I have so many mixed feelings regarding it. Moments I thought were clever and a nice twist and others that didn't make sense, felt forced for the idea of a "twist" or "reveal" and really did not like how the characters were written.
One of my major issues was how the female characters were written. From the beginning it was just little things from Tess's POV that were giving "woman written by a man" in terms of the unrealistic way she carried herself. I almost felt very angry at the "absent mother" trope here. I understand she's a busy homicide detective but Justin's schedule isn't also chaotic between his patients and consulting for the police department regularly??? Just felt like we were villanizing her early on subtly. Then there was a weird moment when she she looks at herself in the mirror that really made me feel like this was written by a man who doesn't know what it's like to be in a woman's shoes.
Then with Lisa's or Diane's "twist" / "reveal". The whole premise of Father Silence as a serial killer was alluring and then you destroyed it by coming out of left field with a new villain/puppet master that didn't make sense and didn't have any groundwork for so far. With how the beginning of the story was going it just felt like "of course, you had to make a woman (a mother) the biggest evil here." Everything is a woman's fault upon reflection. Tess can't do anything right in her eyes or those around her and Lisa was just a manipulating puppet master that all the blame falls on. Elizabeth felt like she was a sad attempt at a "good woman" just to say that this book wasn't painting all women as evil.
But once I got past that, I was still confused. Was there a supernatural force that made 3 people share the same "personality" or was a demon cosplaying as a personality in the three characters at the same time? Because they were all linked and sharing thoughts through this personality which just sat weird when trying to introduce DID. When it claims that Noah "absorbed" the dead kids from the night of Father Silence's capture, did it mean he created these new characters based on them to cope or these were actually the kids?
The whole business with the cult and how many followers they had amassed was odd. How do you get to those numbers and how were these people actually blurred in? What were they following? What was the purpose? What did they think was going to happen? What was their end goal? It just didn't feel like a developed point of the story and more of a use to make the story fit this creepy tone and explain why the police were having such a hard time.”
“The beginning was good, understandable. But there was so many point of view of various characters that probably had no point of being in the book (in my opinion) there is TOO MANY “he said” “she said”. You definitely get lost, hard to keep up with. Although i’m sure the author had the right idea, plot and all was great just very hard to understand and again keep up with if you’re not re-reading what you already read to understand what is going on.”
