Publisher Description

"Six Stories Written in the First Person Singular" is an unusual collection of short stories by legendary British author W. Somerset Maugham. The tales are unified by their narrative voice-each told from a first-person perspective.

Through these stories, Maugham explores human nature, morality, love, and irony with his characteristic wit and keen psychological insight. The narrators, often resembling Maugham himself, recount encounters and experiences that reveal the complexities of human motives and emotions. The first-person narration lends intimacy and authenticity, blurring the line between fiction and autobiography.

Maugham is best known for his novels "The Painted Veil" and "Of Human Bondage." The stories in this collection are presented here in their original and unabridged formats.

About W. Somerset Maugham

W. Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) was an English novelist, short story writer and playwright. Much like the protagonist he created for "Of Human Bondage," Maugham was born abroad, orphaned as a young man, educated in England and went to university in Germany. Maugham eventually received a medical degree, though he never actually working as a physician. He published his first book - "Liza of Lembeth" - in 1897. It was a (then) shocking study of adultery and its consequence and received mixed reviews, but quite a bit of notoriety due to its subject matter. His subsequent novels did not fare as well, so Maugham switched to drama and found great success in the theatre. At one point, Maugham had four separate shows running in London at the same time. By 1914, he had made his mark on the literary world, having published eight novels and thirteen plays, but his best days were yet to come. In 1915, he published "Of Human Bondage," which many consider his masterpiece. He would continue to write plays and novels over the next couple of decades - including "The Painted Veil" (1925), "The Constant Wife" (1926) and "Cakes and Ale" (1930) - before abandoning the theatre in the 1930's.Maugham also oversaw the filming and production of several adaptations and original works for film as well as a television program, Somerset Maugham Theater, in America that was highly successful.Maugham died in the south of France in December of 1965 at the age of ninety-one.
