Publisher Description

Rebecca Ross, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Divine Rivals, delivers a thrilling new romantasy about a girl who partners with an unlikely ally to save her sister’s life. Perfect for fans of Heartless Hunter, Dance of Thieves, and Warrior of the Wild.

After eight years apart, Evadne can’t wait to see her older sister, Halcyon. But, when Halcyon returns from the queen’s army a day early, Eva knows something is terribly wrong. Halcyon is on the run and being chased by her commander after being charged with murder.

Though Halcyon’s life is spared, her punishment is heavy— five years hard labor, five years imprisonment, and five years serving the house she has wronged. Suspicious of the circumstances, Eva volunteers to take part of Halcyon’s sentence. She’s sent to serve in the commander’s house, where she meets Damon, a handsome and intriguing mage. Eva must work with Damon on a potentially deadly mission to retrieve a powerful relic that could save the kingdom—and clear her sister’s name. But as the sisters continue to serve each of their sentences, they quickly learn that there are fates worse than death.

  • Magical Quest: To spare her sister, Evadne volunteers to take on a quest with Damon to retrieve a relic that could save their kingdom.
  • Falling for the Wrong Person: Damon is the son of the person who accused Evadne's sister, Halcyon, of murder, but Evadne still feels sparks when they’re together.
  • The Importance of Sisterhood: Evadne is willing to risk her freedom to give her sister, Halcyon, a better life.
  • Standalone Fantasy Romance: With a rich world inspired by Ancient Greece, a lush plot, and a captivating slow burn romance, this standalone novel is perfect for devouring in one sitting.

“This book had everything I should have loved…and yet i can’t bring myself to care. At all. I really tried. I wanted to love it. I was rooting for it. But in the end I was just glad it was over. 😭💔 The story follows two sisters, Halcyon and Evadne, after Halcyon accidentally kills her shield mate and gets sentenced to 15 years of punishment. Evadne, being the loyal sister she is, takes five of those years for her. The book alternates between their POVs as they serve their sentences and uncover corruption in their kingdom. Now, credit where it’s due: Rebecca Ross is a strong writer. The sister dynamic is easily the best part (and the only part of the book that was sort of a little bit developed 🫴🥀) But everything else? Underdeveloped. The worldbuilding sounds interesting there are gods (the “divines”) and magic users who cast spells by singing (quaint ik 🥹) but none of it actually goes anywhere. The magic is supposedly central to the plot, yet somehow feels completely irrelevant by the end. And the climax…yeah. Evadne, who has never fought a day in her life, suddenly manages to stab the main villain while actively bleeding out from multiple wounds. And the book just expects you to accept that this is the natural, satisfying conclusion to everything that came before. It’s not that it doesn’t make sense it’s that it’s SO underwhelming when it does. Also, this being marketed as a romantasy is…optimistic. There is a love interest. Technically. He shows up, says maybe five lines, contributes nothing, and leaves. If you’re here for romance, you’re going to be disappointed. Overall, this book didn’t suck, it just wasn’t memorable. As a chronic binge reader I was never hooked, after two chapters I was done, kept putting it down, and never felt any urgency to pick it back up. If you find it for 30 cents at a garage sale and have nothing else to read, sure. Otherwise? You’re not missing anything”
