Shoot the Piano Player
ByPublisher Description
Once upon a time Eddie played concert piano to reverent audiences at Carnegie Hall. Now he bangs out honky-tonk for drunks in a dive in Philadelphia. But then two people walk into Eddie's life--the first promising Eddie a future, the other dragging him back into a treacherous past.
Shoot the Piano Player is a bittersweet and nerve-racking exploration of different kinds of loyalty: the kind a man owes his family, no matter how bad that family is; the kind a man owes a woman; and, ultimately, the loyalty he owes himself. The result is a moody thriller that, like the best hard-boiled fiction, carries a moral depth charge.

“"Yeah, he's a loner, all right," the waitress murmured. "Even when he's with someone, he's alone."
Shoot the Piano Player is a very good Noir that kept me guessing until the end. What exactly was Eddie's problem? Who was Turley running from? Why did Lena assault Plyne? Was Lena followed to the hideout or was it a conspiracy?
My favorite part was the car ride to Jersey with Morris and Feather. The discussions of watermelon trees and the need for more playgrounds to deter juvenile delinquency were hilarious.
I was first introduced to Goodis via one of his excellent short stories in https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7959204.The_Best_American_Noir_of_the_Century . He is worth seeking out.”
