Shoedog
ByPublisher Description
From "the poet laureate of the D.C. crime world" (Esquire) comes this powerful early novel--the noirish story of how a Washington, D.C., liquor store heist shows a drifter named Constantine what it means to be a shoedog.

“Almost but not quite. I almost gave it four stars, I almost couldn't put it down in parts, I almost enjoyed it. But not quite and I can't work out why. It is a stand-alone piece of crime fiction and well written. I think it feels indulgent at times - Shoedog is not Constantine, the drifter and central character whose story is the essence of the book, but Randolph, a peripheral character. Or is he a peripheral character? Pelecanos wanders all around the other characters and their histories and motivations and it is interesting but distracting. I think it's a book that would benefit greatly from reading in one or two sessions rather than spreading out over a time period as I did. I found myself having to flip back to remind myself who everyone was.
I enjoyed it enough to say it's worth a read and I would definitely try more by this author, but that's about it.”
