“Where to start….. Let’s talk about how one character couldn’t possibly have all the horrible things in the world happen to her.
If I could, I would have given this book negative stars. First off it’s a book by a MALE writer who wants to do a becoming of age piece for a FEMALE character? Oh, but it’s ok….. let’s just have her left by her abusive father, raped as a teenager, depressed and fat, have her mother die, pressured into sex by a female friend, sent to a crazy house, then stalk her ex-roommate’s boyfriend and so much more that is horrible.
This was such unrealistic story and possibly didn’t have a great plot besides seeing how much mental stress and torture a person could go through. Don’t worry, it ends with her seeing a whale.”

Wally Lamb is the author of seven New York Times bestselling novels: The River Is Waiting, I’ll Take You There, We Are Water, Wishin’ and Hopin’, The Hour I First Believed, I Know This Much Is True, and She’s Come Undone. Lamb also edited Couldn’t Keep It to Myself and I’ll Fly Away, two volumes of essays from students in his writing workshop at York Correctional Institution, a women’s prison in Connecticut, where he was a volunteer facilitator for twenty years. Lamb lives in Connecticut with his wife, Christine, and they have three sons.
