Sheltering Rain by Jojo Moyes digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Me Before You, the basis for the major motion picture, comes the touching, unforgettable story of three generations of Irish women faced with the fundamental truths of love, duty, and the unbreakable bond that unites mothers and daughters.

Estranged from her mother since she ran away from her rural Irish home as a young woman, Kate swore a future oath that she’d always be a friend to her daughter, Sabine. But history has a way of repeating itself, and Kate now faces an ever-widening chasm between herself and her daughter. With Sabine about to make her own journey to Ireland to see the grandmother Kate abandoned, Kate is left wondering how they ever made it here, and what she can do to close the gap between them.

For Joy, seeing her granddaughter is a dream come true. After the painful separation from Kate, she’s looking forward to having time with Sabine. Yet almost as soon as the young woman arrives, the lack of common ground between them deflates her enthusiasm. And when Sabine’s impetuous, inquisitive nature forces Joy to face long-buried secrets from her past, she realizes that perhaps it’s time to finally heal old wounds.

“This perceptive…novel does the mother-and-daughter thing in page-turning style.”--Elle

Thumbs Up“For me, Sheltering Rain by Jojo Moyes is a solid three-star read. It’s the kind of book I liked and enjoyed while reading, but I don’t see myself picking it up again—at least not anytime soon. The story weaves together the lives of three generations of women, each dealing with their struggles, memories, and relationships. When I started the book, I was instantly hooked. Joy and Edward, as a couple, had me curious—I wanted to know more about them, see their growth, and uncover their stories. But by the second chapter, it became clear that the focus wasn’t on them. Instead, the narrative shifts to their granddaughter Sabine, who is sent by her mother, Kate (Joy and Edward’s daughter), to her estranged parents’ home while Kate works through her own relationship issues. Sabine is a teenager—winy and frustrating at times—but I often found myself relating to her in unexpected ways. The book also dives into Kate’s life, dedicating chapters to her story, showing how the three women of different generations eventually come together to rebuild their fractured family. What I appreciated most about this story is how it highlights that nobody is perfect. Even the relationships that seem ideal often hide dark truths and struggles. What makes a relationship meaningful is the effort we put into holding it together. Relationships are hard work, but the story reminds us that it’s the effort and commitment that keep them alive. The book is full of poignant lessons, and some will stay with me for a long time. One that struck me deeply is the idea that we can lose someone close to us at any moment. Instead of focusing on negativity or holding grudges, we should focus on creating good memories with the people we love. My only issue with the book was its pacing. It felt long, and at times it dragged. Maybe it’s intentionally written that way, but without my determination to finish my first book of 2025, I might have set it aside for later. The story takes its time to pick up, but once it does, everything seems to happen all at once—and I enjoyed that part. Overall, it was a good book and my first from Jojo Moyes. I’m planning to explore more of her work in the coming months. While it wasn’t necessarily a romance, it had elements of romance, family drama, and everyday life, and that’s what made it beautiful in its own way. I liked it, enjoyed it even, and though it may not be a re-read for me, it sure did leave an impression.”
“This was not a good book. I think I read that this was her first one, or one of her first, so I will give it a pass if that is the case. I did not like any of the characters. The three main women characters were the worst. It isn't well written, and it was so up and down with love/hate that I just lost interest. In the end I didn't care what happened to them and good thing because the ending wasn't good either.”
