For years, Camille has hardly spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother or to the half-sister she barely knows: a beautiful thirteen-year-old with an eerie grip on the town. Now, installed in her old bedroom in her family's Victorian mansion, Camille finds herself identifying with the young victims—a bit too strongly. Dogged by her own demons, she must unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past if she wants to get the story—and survive this homecoming.

Surprised Face with Open Mouth“Sharp Objects is the debut novel by Gillian Flynn. I have read Dark Places before, so I knew I needed to pick this up sometime. Reporter Camille Preaker must return to her tiny hometown Wind Gap to cover the unsolved murder if a preteen girl and disappearance of another. Camille has hardly spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother or to the half-sister she barely knows. Camille finds herself identifying with the young victims – a bit too strongly. Dogged by her own demons, she must unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past if she wants to get the story – and survive this homecoming. I had a hard time at the start of this book, especially with all the different names. Sometimes, I felt like I could not follow what is happening and who is involved, but it eventually got better. The narrative is fast paced, which was great, and I love small-town stories. However, there was no real suspense up until the 70% mark of the book, but somehow it still managed to be a page-turner, probably because of how gruesome it is. You do not want to read but cannot seem to stop. I could not bring myself to like any of the characters, Camille lost all my sympathy when she slept with an 18-year old boy, who also happens to be the brother of the victim. Why the hell would you do that? The sexualization of 13-year old Amma was difficult to read through. This book’s strength is definitely the gruesomeness of the characters and the actions. I thought that the ending was not as predictable as others claim it to be, but that is also subjective. I would probably not recommend Sharp Objects but much rather recommend Dark Places to everyone instead. While this book was not bad, I felt like the narrative was all over the place, and Dark Places worked better as one body of work. Nevertheless, Gillian Flynn is a great author and her books are worth reading, even if this was not my favorite.”
