The story follows Cécile Auclair, a young girl living with her father Euclide, an apothecary, in the shadow of the great rock of Quebec. After the death of her mother, Cécile strives to maintain their household and preserve French civilization in the harsh New World.
Through encounters with various characters-including the reclusive Count Frontenac, missionaries, fur traders, and fellow colonists-Cather explores themes of faith, domesticity, cultural preservation, and the tension between Old World traditions and New World realities. The "rock" serves as both a literal geographical feature and a metaphor for stability and endurance in an uncertain frontier environment.
