I am so glad I enjoyed this book more than the last. Krinard had really impressed me with the first book and to be let down by the second, I was on the fence. I’m very pleased with Drakon and Phoenix’s story. They really complimented each other in a rather unusual way and their relationship development was rather unusual as well.
Let me start with Phoenix. I really liked that she wasn’t your run-of-the-mill heroine. Yes, she had similarities to previous heroines in this series, but she was unique. She was just as determined and skilled as other agents, but her abilities were applied differently. She did he best to figure things out and accomplish her mission, but everything she tried to do got messed up or flat-out failed. She off-handedly accomplished even more important things because her initial ones went haywire. She was still very much a heroine, but she did it in a unique way that really added to her as her own person and to her relationship with Drakon. Through this process, she realized a truth about the Enclave and about herself that ultimately led to a dangerous, yet very happy-ever-after.
Drakon was also an unusual hero. He was hard because he had to be, but deep down he was a very compassionate man. Phoenix turned his world on its head in an instant and he was never able to recover. He knew what he should do compared to what he wanted to do, but his heart easily won out. Despite being thrown for a loop, he kept his head and used his wits to conquer all—including Phoenix. He was willing to do whatever was necessary to save those he cared about. However, if you were on the wrong side of him, you are pretty much as good as dead.
I loved the contrasting sides of both Phoenix and Drakon. It gave both the characters an interesting flavor and also helped cement their relationship. I wish there could have been more horizontal dancing, and little bit spicier, but overall their relationship was raw and fast and perfect. An unusual love for an unusual couple. Once again, I’m excited for the next book.”
