Shadowfell

By Juliet Marillier
Shadowfell by Juliet Marillier digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Sixteen-year-old Neryn is alone in the land of Alban, where the oppressive king has ordered anyone with magical strengths captured and brought before him. Eager to hide her own canny skill--a uniquely powerful ability to communicate with the fairy-like Good Folk--Neryn sets out for the legendary Shadowfell, a home and training ground for a secret rebel group determined to overthrow the evil King Keldec.

During her dangerous journey, she receives aid from the Good Folk, who tell her she must pass a series of tests in order to recognize her full potential. She also finds help from a handsome young man, Flint, who rescues her from certain death--but whose motives in doing so remain unclear. Neryn struggles to trust her only allies. They both hint that she alone may be the key to Alban's release from Keldec's rule. Homeless, unsure of who to trust, and trapped in an empire determined to crush her, Neryn must make it to Shadowfell not only to save herself, but to save Alban.

Shadowfell Reviews

3.5
“4.5* This was a slow Juliet Marillier book, but I feel really satisfied on finishing it. I really do love a travel story, and this was basically only travelling, walking, surviving. It could feel a little repetitive at times, and the storyline was very slow but it was also very satisfying to get to that ending. I am so so fascinated with Flint as a character and I'm excited to read more from him. I'm also excited for the next book as we leave this one with more characters (the rest of the book being a lot of Neryn on her own). As always I love Juliet Marillier's writing, and although this is YA, it still feels quite mature, just doesn't get as dark or deep as her adult works. My only issue with this book is that Neryn basically has no agency during a majority of the book. A lot seems to happen to her rather than her doing things. However the ending, again, leaves us on an exciting note and I'm hopeful for some character development from her.”
