Shadow of the Fox

By Julie Kagawa
Shadow of the Fox by Julie Kagawa digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

In this first book of her Japanese mythology-inspired Shadow of the Fox trilogy, bestselling author Julie Kagawa weaves a stunning, high-stakes tale of alliances and deceptions, characters who aren’t what they seem, and secrets that could change the fate of the world.

Every millennium, whoever holds the Scroll of a Thousand Prayers has the power to call the great Kami Dragon from the sea and ask for one wish. The time is near...and the missing pieces of the scroll will be sought throughout the land of Iwagoto.

When demons kill half-kitsune Yumeko’s adoptive family, she’s forced to flee her home with one part of the ancient scroll. Fate thrusts her into the path of mysterious samurai Kage Tatsumi, who is Yumeko’s best hope for survival. But he’s under orders to retrieve the scroll. An uneasy alliance forms, and Yumeko begins the deception of a lifetime, knowing her secrets are more than a matter of life or death—they’re the key to the fate of the world.

Books in the Shadow of the Fox trilogy:
  • Shadow of the Fox
  • Soul of the Sword

Beaming Face with Smiling Eyes“every single character was just *chefs kiss* only (very minor) critique is that I would've loved a stronger fmc (or any strong fmc) but there's a Canon explanation for why there isn't one, so I'm chilling :) overall I wish I could bleach it from my brain so I could reread it without any memories.”
Beaming Face with Smiling Eyes“I was both very excited and apprehensive to start another series of Julie’s and man I was not disappointed. the relationships between the characters was very intriguing, and I can’t wait to pick up the next book. Also a very interesting story with Japanese mythology. Of course, Julie Kagawa has been my favorite author for years, and this book only enhanced that feeling! ❤️”
Thumbs Up“I found this one hard to get into at first. While I loved the introduction, and Yumeko & Tatsumi as characters are fun— the writing irked me at first. In particular how hard it was being driven home that someone is emotionless. A weapon. Nothing else. Understandably, it’s important, but it was twelve times in a singular chapter, and was relentless for a while more after. But, if you can get by the repetition it is a worthy beginning to a tale. I started this without knowing it was a trilogy, but it became glaringly obvious with the slow pace of the story that there was undoubtedly more. That’s not to say the pacing was bad, though! It just made me realize that this was definitely not the only book. The pacing was fine. There was plenty of action, and the characters are likeable. I quite liked how the ending went, leaving me curious to continue when I was honestly sure at the beginning that I wouldn’t want to (after realizing there were more, anyway). As far as romance, I wouldn’t even say there was an ember in this one yet, but the groundwork is there.”
