Shades of Mercy

By Bruce Borgos
Shades of Mercy by Bruce Borgos digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

In the usually quiet high desert of Nevada, Sheriff Porter Beck faces one of his greatest challenges—a series of unlikely, disturbing and increasingly deadly events of unknown origins.

Porter Beck is the sheriff in the high desert of Nevada, doing the same lawman's job his father once did now that he's returned home after decades away. With his twelve person department, they cover a large area that is usually very quiet, but not of late. One childhood friend is the latest to succumb to a new wave of particularly strong illegal opioids, another childhood friend—now an enormously successful rancher—is targeted by a military drone, hacked and commandeered by an unknown source. The hacker is apparently local—local enough to call out Beck by name—and that means they are Beck's problem.

Beck's investigation leads him to Mercy Vaughn, the one known hacker in the area. The problem is that she's a teenager, locked up with no computer access at the secure juvenile detention center. But there's something Mercy that doesn't sit quite right with Beck. But when Mercy disappears, Beck understands that she's in danger and time is running out for all of them.

“This book was a wild ride with spy’s , drones, and hackers it read like a movie. This is the second book in the series but the first that I have read so it can be enjoyed by itself but after reading this crazy book I might be going back to the first. The pacing was fast paced and the writing engaging. My only complaint was I felt a little disconnected from the characters but that could have been from me jumping in to the series in the second book. I would like to thank NetGalley and the publishers for a chance to read this book for an honest review.”
“This is the second book in the Porter Beck series and I can’t wait for more. Like the first one this one was so thrilling and kept me hooked from the very beginning.”
“In Shades of Mercy, we're back with Sheriff Porter Beck in his small town in Nevada. This time, Porter has to find a computer hacker for the Feds while also trying to shut down the fentanyl ring overtaking his jurisdiction, losing a friend in the process. Porter's sister Brinley has a much bigger part in this book, which was a nice addition to the cast of characters. A fearless badass, Brin isn't afraid to get into the thick of it, and Porter can use all the help he can get while most of his team is out helping with forest fires. Beck thinks a teenager incarcerated at the Youth Center may be behind the hacking of federal drones, and she soon becomes an important part of his investigation. When Porter starts tying the drugs and the hacking together, he knows that Mercy is the only one who can help him...and she's missing. Have the Feds taken her because of her hacking abilities? Did the Chinese man that Beck ran into kidnap her for his own reasons? Or is she just running, knowing there are people looking for her? Like the first book in the series, it was a fast-paced action-fueled read. Borgos weaves an intricate story of drugs, betrayal, and cybercrime, while keeping the characters as human as possible. They aren't all infallible, and Porter especially, isn't perfect. All in all, a great addition to the series. If you enjoy a good suspense with interesting characters, then this is for you!”
