“The lesser known Golden Age writers and G. K. Chesterton shine in these short crime stories. It’s less the actual solving of the crime but the ingenuity of the crime that bolsters this short story collection. And all the more so, for its rural setting. If you love crime in a small village, this collection is highly recommended.”

“A diverting collection, with some of the stories succeeding more as curiosities (notably 'The Black Doctor', a non-Holmes story by Arthur Conan Doyle) than as good mysteries. I was most impressed by the story by Leonora Wodehouse (PG Wodehouse's beloved step-daughter), which shows a real flair for detection fiction, as well as a cheeky, knowing sense of humour. It really is too bad that she died before her time -- if this one story is anything to go by, she would have eventually been counted among the foremost crime fiction writers of the period.”
