“So. I love witches. I love witches. When I was little, my fondest dream was to grow up and be either a witch or a magical girl like Sailor Moon. Obviously, neither of those happened, but I’m still working on it. In the meantime, I absolutely love picking up books about witches (and watching shows about magical girls), so when I started this one I had a little bit of a bias going on. Thankfully, that stopped right as I got past the first line. The way this book starts is very confusing, I had to stop and make sure I hadn’t somehow digitally lost some pages or had some sort of glitch. I know other books can start their story running and pull it off spectacularly, but with this story I felt like I was in the middle of that running start and didn’t know where I had first put my foot. It was a little disorienting. That aside, once I got the hang of what was happening, the rest of the story progressed pretty smoothly and it was pretty funny. I enjoyed the characters a lot. Camellia is smart (but not too smart) and sassy, Sarmine is frustratingly witchy, Devon is… Devon. Which I loved. Devon was my favorite character. I only wish I could have gotten a little more of him and his demon as the story had gone along, and maybe a little less of the best friend, whose name I can’t even recall at the moment. The plot twists didn’t really get me at the end either, but that doesn’t necessarily detract from the story this time, because I was way more focused on things that didn’t concern the plot twists than I was on what I was probably supposed to be focused on. A cool tidbit of this book is that the song Devon sings, Lion Tamer, was recorded by a friend of Connolly’s and posted to Soundcloud, which you can find here. All in all, it’s a really cute read and super fast to get through, so if you like short little witch stories with cute aspects and mildly annoying characters named Sparkle, then pick this one up, you’ll probably like it. Edit: apparently there are more now! I'll have to get reading them.”
