Thinking Face“A pillar of philosophy. I love this work so, so much because it’s so thorough and I, personally, find many of my own “amateur” thoughts articulated here, a concept itself described by Emerson. The guy really has inspired, if not shaped, much of how I see the world to this day. I do love a philosophy that doesn’t seem too self-absorbed as well. Emerson is beyond himself here and purely seeks to invigorate the reader with their own confidence and to encourage their own deliberation. This isn’t for him, it’s for us, and that makes it so much easier to receive. Speaking of reception, his writing, to me, is just complex enough to make me work to interpret it but not too complex as to where I get “lost in the sauce”. He is wonderfully clear and incredibly dense in his delivery, famous for his frequent use of aphorisms. I could sit here and include paragraphs worth of singular sentences that I felt were worthy of an entire article themselves. Though I didn’t really agree with much of his advocation for reclusivity and aggressive individualism (I just don’t see how we’re supposed to use all this self-reliant wisdom and power if we’re in the house all day), what would be an eminent work of philosophy without taking the concepts to certain extremes? All in all, seriously something I think everyone should read at some point (honestly as soon as possible) in their life. I really feel like it unlocks something inside you, making you feel special in a way that inspires action.”
Thinking Face“And thus: my obsession with Ralph Waldo Emerson begins…”
