Publisher Description

Orphan Black meets Fringe in a story that reminds us that living our best life sometimes means embracing the imperfect one we already have.

"Fraught and deeply moving...the work of a genuinely exciting new talent." —Booker Prize winner, George Saunders.

“Aimee Pokwatka’s Self-Portrait with Nothing is tantalizing and elusive lacework, delicately balanced between the branches of fantasy, mystery and realism like a spider’s web.” —The New York Times

If a picture paints a thousand worlds . . .

Abandoned as an infant on the local veterinarian’s front porch, Pepper Rafferty was raised by two loving mothers, and now, at thirty-six is married to the stable, supportive Ike. She’s never told anyone that at fifteen she discovered the identity of her biological mother.

That’s because her birth mother is Ula Frost, a reclusive painter famous for the outrageous claims that her portraits summon their subjects’ doppelgängers from parallel universes.

Researching the rumors, Pepper couldn’t help but wonder: Is there a parallel universe in which she is more confident, more accomplished, better able to accept love?

A universe in which Ula decided she was worth keeping?

A universe in which Ula’s rejection didn’t still hurt too much to share?

Combining a thrilling pan-continental race against time with an authentic and touching personal drama, Self-Portrait with Nothing is an unforgettable debut that explores what it means to be part of a family.

“I was intrigued by the premise of this novel - adult adoptee finds out she is the daughter of a reclusive artist with mysterious powers - and sold on it by the publisher's description of the story as Orphan Black meets Fringe, two of my favorite sci-fi series. While that description true thematically, the tone of Self-Portrait with Nothing is different. The impact of being abandoned at birth, and the impact of Pepper's attachment wounds on her marriage are as central to the story as the doppelgangers and alternate universes. She's a frustrating character at times, repeatedly keeping supportive husband Ike in the dark, and making decisions that left me wondering how they'd forged a loving relationship in the first place. There's intrigue and action as the mystery unfolds, some parts of it better paced than others. The first half of the book hints at the fantastical element but it's not until the second that we really get to see it. I would have liked to spend more time with the different doppelgangers sooner. I appreciated the character of Ula, and the author's ability to humanize her without redeeming or romanticizing her, allowing her to remain flawed and complex. Overall, a unique take on some familiar concepts that I was glad to spend some time with. Narration by Jesse Vilinksy was strong.”
“Imagine if your long lost bio-mom just happened to be a famous painter who may or may not have magical abilities, and somehow you get roped into a transatlantic adventure to find her when she disappears. This books was so interesting and entertaining and just completely unlike anything else I’ve ever read. This book is for: • anyone who daydreams about alternate universes • fans of the show Bones • people with mommy issues”
