“The started off strong with an interesting setup (Greenland Viking FMC x Saxon Prince MMC), great tension between the MMC and FMC, and an actual enemies-to-lovers story.
Then it quickly became muddled with tedious inner monologue repeating the same information over and over. There’s too much telling and not enough showing. I skimmed multiple pages and missed nothing.
The couple’s banter leaves a lot to be desired. It feels dry and the dialogue doesn't flow. There's a lot of miscommunication and misunderstanding. The MMC is always the one starting arguments with the FMC while she longs for <spoiler>the knight in shining armor who saved her life years before their arranged marriage.</spoiler>
The FMC is supposed to be strong and witty, but she gets captured and used against the MMC whenever she tries to help the war effort against the MMC's half-brother.
The MMC is stubborn and refuses to accept help from FMC's Viking tribe even though an alliance is literally the entire reason the King (MMC's father) arranged their marriage. I don't have an issue with morally gray/flawed heroes, but his decisions should still be consistent with his established character.
It's reasonable he resents his father for forcing him into marriage, but his castle is currently under siege and his people would be slaughtered if they lose. If he really cared for his people and was the brilliant military leader the side characters claimed he was, wouldn't he swallow his resentment and accept help?
Also, there’s a third act breakup that makes the MMC have a complete collapse of his character arc.
<spoiler>His people, sisters, and late father have all accepted the foreign FMC as their queen. It’s only him who’s stubborn. He keeps lusting after her body, but is disgusted at the thought of creating a heathen child. Despite this, he finishes inside her.
He’s still thinking about how much he enjoys sleeping with her when he snoops through her belongings without permission and finds his dead mother’s necklace.
'You're only believing what you want to hear. You're making up a story in your head, she said. 'I've proved my loyalty at every opportunity?
"The fact you even have this makes you his accomplice.
'What? No!'
[…]
'No,' he said, closing the distance between them, hooking his fingers under her chin. 'I don't want to be a father because I don't want to bring a child into this world if it's going to be a heathen. If it's going to have your father's blood running through its veins!'
He immediately yells at her and accuses her of being responsible for his mother’s death despite her not knowing where the necklace came from. This is after she lost her virginity and was vulnerable with him. Although he regrets it immediately after, it made me lose all sympathy for him. </spoiler>”

This book is about a marriage of convenience to stop a violent and deadly war. The marriage is between Prince Teon and Revna who is the Viking Chief’s daughter. As this is a noble marriage however the Prince must leave immediately after the nuptials to fight in another violent war.
Now Teon has returned to claim his crown and marriage, but is shocked to see the love and respect his people have for the wife he had only needed as an ally. That is until their wedding night that never had happened becomes a reality where sparks blew and he realizes what he has missed from this special Viking wife and so much more from this incredible woman. Will it be enough for a HEA? Read and find out.
A new Harlequin author for me that I absolutely love! This is a riveting, fast-paced, romantic adventure that readers will love weaving true history with a fictional romance that will make readers swoon! Another Harlequin romance diving into the past. A book I highly recommend!

“A forced marriage unites Saxon Prince Teon and a Viking maiden, Revna, in their youth. Teon, burdened by his prejudices against the Vikings, unjustly projects his resentment onto Revna, leaving a complicated relationship in his wake. His departure for eight years leaves Revna to forge her own path among strangers, a challenge she rises to.
Revna emerges as a compelling protagonist. Her strength, independence, and compassion are commendable, even as she exhibits a tendency to forgive too readily. Teon, despite his initial shortcomings in the form of prejudices and closed-mindedness towards Revna and her Viking heritage, undergoes a transformation by the book's conclusion.
The novel's medieval setting and Viking elements are engaging, contributing to the overall enjoyment of the story. The narrative thread involving their parents' histories is skillfully woven, adding depth to the characters and their motivations. Despite Teon's initial flaws, the book is well-crafted and enjoyable, enriched by its historical context and the compelling journey of its characters.
