ByPublisher Description
Body art meets popular science in this elegant, mind-blowing collection, written by renowned science writer Carl Zimmer. This fascinating book showcases hundreds of eye-catching tattoos that pay tribute to various scientific disciplines, from evolutionary biology and neuroscience to mathematics and astrophysics, and reveals the stories of the individuals who chose to inscribe their obsessions in their skin. Best of all, each tattoo provides a leaping-off point for bestselling essayist and lecturer Zimmer to reflect on the science in question, whether its the importance of an image of Darwins finches or the significance of the uranium atom inked into the chest of a young radiologist.

“When I picked up this book at the library, I guess I really didn’t know what I was picking up. Mainly I assumed that I was picking up a book on the science of tattoos, not the tattoos of those in STEM fields (or those who are obsessed with STEM).
Overall it was a good book: some good tattoo art and good stories behind each piece.”

“I bought this as a gift for several friends who teach or work in science—they all loved it. The concept is unique: it explores each person’s path through design and meaning, making it both quirky and fascinating—a fine character study through objects.
Is it a must-read? A niche gem? A perfect gift? Honestly, it could be all three.
If you come across this book, grab it—you likely won’t be disappointed. While it might read more like a coffee table book or quick browse, it’s still deeply satisfying. Visually, the palette could be bolder, and some photos feel a bit flat, but the overall presentation and vibe are solid.”
