Publisher Description

Collected for the first time, these Dune novellas by bestselling authors Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson shine a light upon the darker corners of the Dune universe. Spanning space and time, Sands of Dune is essential reading for any fan of the series.

The world of Dune has shaped an entire generation of science fiction. From the sand blasted world of Arrakis, to the splendor of the imperial homeworld of Kaitain, readers have lived in a universe of treachery and wonder.

Now, these stories expand on the Dune universe, telling of the lost years of Gurney Halleck as he works with smugglers on Arrakis in a deadly gambit for revenge; inside the ranks of the Sardaukar as the child of a betrayed nobleman becomes one of the Emperor’s most ruthless fighters; a young firebrand Fremen woman, a guerrilla fighter against the ruthless Harkonnens, who will one day become Shadout Mapes.

Sands of Dune Reviews

3.5
“Sands of Dune a collection of short Novellas set in the world of Dune. This was a little fun read In my opinion with some very enjoyable stories set before and during the original novel most of the stories are Great there was one that kinda lost me and just wasn't as gripping as the rest in my personal opinion. They do a lot of interesting things in this with some of the side characters in the original Dune especially Shadout Mapes (who was Jessica's Fremen helper in the first novel) we get here backstory and how she was a freedom fighter against the Harkonnens it's great seeing characters like that shine in these stories. It's definitely more of a straight forward read and there's less of the philosophical stuff when Brian Herbert is writing but for me it's nothing that ruins the story or the experience and it feels like Dune to me. It's definitely a lot more action heavy with these short stories which makes a fun little read in my opinion but there is definitely a different writing style here and it's noticeable but again nothing that doesn't make it feel like Dune in my opinion. My favourite story is definitely The Waters of Kanly which shows Gurney Halleck when he's with the Smugglers during the events of the first Novel it was awesome seeing this character again and I always wanted more of this story and it adds to Dune really well in my opinion and the action in that one is written really well. My only issue is the last story just wasn't that good in my opinion it was okay just didn't grip as much as the other ones. I get what they were going for and showing more of the Feud between Harkonnen and Atreides which is interesting to see for a fan of Dune but the story was just a little dull for the most part and like I said didn't get me as much as the other ones. Verdict ⭐⭐⭐⭐. An interesting collection of short stories showing some interesting moments in the world of Dune with some of the side characters taking the spotlight like Gurney Halleck and Shadout Mapes. The last story didn't really do it for me and was a little dull but a fun collection for any fan of the Dune Universe and I would definitely recommend you check this out.”
