Sailor's Delight

By Rose Lerner
Sailor's Delight by Rose Lerner digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Self-effacing, overworked bookkeeper Elie Benezet doesn't have time to be in love. Too bad he already is—with his favorite client, Augustus Brine. The Royal Navy sailing master is kind, handsome, and breathtakingly competent. He's also engaged to his childhood sweetheart. And now that his prize money is coming in after years of delay, he can afford to marry her…once Elie submits the final prize paperwork.

When Augustus comes home, determined to marry by the end of his brief leave, Elie does his best to set his broken heart aside and make it happen. But he's interrupted by one thing after another: other clients, the high holidays, his family's relentless efforts to marry him off. Augustus isn't helping by renting a room down the hall, shaving shirtless with his door open, and inviting Elie to the public baths. If Elie didn't know better, he'd think Augustus didn't want to get married.

To cap it all off, Augustus's fiancée arrives in town, senses that Elie has a secret, and promptly accuses him of embezzling. Has Elie's doom been sealed…or is there still time to change his fate?

“SUCH a delightful read. Perfect pining, extremely relatable characters, deeply good dialogue, SUCH good characters. A genuine delight.”
“I received an ARC from the author and am voluntarily posting a review. All opinions are my own. Sailor’s Delight is a delight indeed! Releasing just in time for the observance of Rosh Hashanah this year, the holiday and other elements of Jewish culture are embedded within the narrative, as is common for a Rose Lerner story. Right off the bat, I loved the expression of the passage of time both through Gregorian and Jewish calendar dates, as well as a sprinkling of what the occasion means for these characters. As for the romance itself, it’s super sweet. Elie is a bookkeeper who has long been in love with one of his clients, Navy sailor Augustus Brine. Initially, it seems hopeless and unrequited, but I love how the pining gradually becomes mutual and grows over the course of the book. I also appreciate how the supporting characters tear down some common stereotypes. Brine is initially engaged to a woman named Sarah, and while that can sometimes be cause for concern, whether it be in terms of a love triangle or her being vilified, I love how supportive she was and just wanted the best for him. And while homosexual relationships (particularly among men) were illegal during the Regency, I love that the focus is never on that, and not only is the love between Elie and Brine positive throughout, but Elie’s family is accepting. This book is such a warm wonderful book, and I love how it’s a loving tribute to Jewish culture and family dynamics. If you’re looking for a Jewish romance, especially one centered around Rosh Hashanah, I recommend checking this out.”
