Running in the Family
ByPublisher Description
In the late 1970s Ondaatje returned to his native island of Sri Lanka. As he records his journey through the drug-like heat and intoxicating fragrances of that "pendant off the ear of India, " Ondaatje simultaneously retraces the baroque mythology of his Dutch-Ceylonese family. An inspired travel narrative and family memoir by an exceptional writer.

“I decided to read this book after reading an analysis by a friend, who believed the book shared many techniques common in postmodern literature- nonlinear structure, unreliable narration, intertextuality (iirc?) etc. I became curious as to how these devices presented themselves, but I find this book really dry and difficult to get through. Nonetheless, I did enjoy the final section of the book where Ondaatje details his father's mental and physical decline. He presents a very nuanced depiction of his parents' relationship where his mother shows a deep love for his father, but is concerned about his manic alcohol consumption and knows she needs to separate for her own safety. This was also mentioned in the first section, but the sections in-between were not as interesting imo.”
