“she took The Substance
mona awad’s way of writing is so unhinged and odd but there’s heart in it, you just need to dig a bit deeper. i’ve noticed quite a few parallels with Bunny too so it felt like i was reading a re-hash of the same formula but overall an insightful story about grief and mommy issues lol. pacing was a bit slow and dragging especially at the beginning but the final two acts was where i got very invested”Whitney.S

““There was never anything to fear. Which is a little disappointing, frankly. Maybe I wanted to be obliterated.”
In awe of Mona Awad. This book is so complex, on the surface covering topics of the cult of skincare… meant literally and figuratively. Then the book reaches into topics of generational trauma and racism in beauty standards. This book had me laughing at the Tom Cruise absurdity and then ugly crying as the line “I can’t protect you from my terrible places that I still go, can’t help but go because no one protected me, no one saved me, no one ever held out their hand and walked me away. But I’m trying to save you, Sunshine. I’m trying in my broken way” Was uttered.
This book will not captivate everyone, but I adored it in all of its weird brilliancy. ❤️”Sara V-C

“For some reason I had it in my mind that this was a horror - and I guess maybe it is but it felt a lot more like a dark contemporary fantasy to me.
It was also very reminiscent of a fairy tale. I liked that it wasn’t a rewrite of a specific fairy tale but instead had elements of multiple ones (Snow White, beauty and the beast, the little mermaid, rumpelstiltskin, and the one about magic shoes).
It was whimsical, poetic, and dark. All the while making a comment on the lengths that we will go for beauty and the dangers of the beauty industry.
I also listened to it on audiobook and really liked the reader.”

Mona Awad is the bestselling author of the novels Rouge, All’s Well, Bunny, and 13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl.
