About Bridget Quinn
My name is Bridget Quinn and I am a student at New York University. In a class of mine, I was challenged to write a children's book about a “tough” topic for children. Immediately, I was inspired to write about Alzheimer’s because my grandpa suffered from the disease. Many of the books already on the market fail to recognize the feelings of the grandparent and that he or she might be scared as well. This is something that I saw in my grandfather when I was young. He was aware that his memory was fleeing him and I could see that this scared him. As a young child, it was a weird experience for me to see someone who was (and still very much is) my hero, be in such a vulnerable state.
So, in Rosie and Grandpa I tried to portray this. My goal was to create a book that would acknowledge the fear that alzheimer’s instills in both the sufferer and their loved ones. At the same time, my book aims to acknowledge that the memories and lessons created between the two persons are never forgotten and although the grandparent may seem distant, they are still the same person at heart.
