About Zane Grey

Zane Grey is perhaps the best-known writer of Western-themed novels in literary history. His novels have sold millions of copies and have been adapted into over a hundred films. His breakthrough novel "The Riders of the Purple Sage" - his best known and best-selling book - is often numbered among the finest novels written in the early 20th century. Born Pearl Zane Grey, he was an athlete and outdoorsman from an early age and even considered a career in professional baseball before dejectedly following his father's career path in dentistry. But Grey, inspired by the adventure stories he read obsessively, decided to pursue a career as a writer. Grey's early stories and books were regularly rejected by publishers, but Grey continued to refine his style and model his own writing after some of his literary heroes, including Owen Wister, a pioneer of the Western novel. Grey finally got his works into print when Outing magazine published one of his stories, but it wasn't until his novel "The Heritage of the Desert" became a best-seller in 1910 that Grey finally enjoyed real success as an author. Grey followed up two years later with "Riders of the Purple Sage," which became a massive hit and gave him the financial freedom he craved.Though married to his wife Dolly for decades - with whom he had three children - Grey was an unapologetic rogue, engaging in many affairs with dozens of mistresses. He was also an avid fisherman and wrote books and articles on the sport for various publications. Never a darling with the critics, Grey nevertheless enjoyed one of the most successful careers in publishing history and sold millions of books during his life. Grey died of heart failure at his home in Altadena, California in 1939. He was sixty-seven years old.
