“The premise and overall trajectory of the series so far looks interesting. While it felt like the blend of sci fi and magic was a little cluttered, I liked the ideas behind it. Most of any qualms I had with the lore so far was rooted in personal preference, so not that big of a deal. I wish the transition from Alexa's status quo life to her new one had been condensed much earlier in the book so we could have more time exploring the vampire world and her role as the Arc in training had more room to shine. What felt like the more engaging meat of the story was rather truncated and mostly summary, having been pushed back to chapter 27. I think if either the arrival at 719 had been held for the focus of the next book and more time was spent on showing Alexa's discovery of her true identity rather than most of it being delivered through exposition dialogue, or the book was extended past 29 chapters to allow readers to get more of a feel of the village and settle in to it as an important setting, than this first installment would've been much more engaging. As of now, it reads more like a first act of a story rather than the first book of a trilogy, which should ideally function as both an act of the larger arc as well as a multi-act installment of its own. With that, and some awkward word choice and overused phrasing here and there, it does show that this is an earlier book in the author's career, but the love for her characters is clear on the page. I can't wait to see how her skill develops over her following series and I might just have to go back and get the next two from this one to see how Alexa shapes up as queen.”
“A little to….. Sci-fi (but not?) for me.”
