Smiling Face with Heart-Eyes“Okay, so Revenant-X is the second book in David Wellington's Red Space Trilogy, and wow, it did not disappoint. Imagine a wild mix of space horror, sci-fi goodness, and zombies aka Revenants. Yep, that's what you're getting here. The story kicks off right where Paradise-1 left us, with Lieutenant Alexandra Petrova and her crew finally landing on Paradise-1 after all the chaos they went through in Book 1. Now their mission is simple (well, not really): figure out what’s going on and survive long enough to get rescued. Easier said than done when the planet is crawling with mind-controlled revenants digging endlessly at the bidding of a billion-year-old entity. Yeah, it's as eerie as it sounds. The pacing? Mostly fast and intense, though there were a few slow bits. But honestly, I can forgive that because David Wellington's writing is just that good—super engaging with top-tier action scenes. He knows how to keep you hooked. Petrova is a total badass despite struggling with the loss of use of her arm. Watching her keep going, even when the basilisk (a psychic alien machine living in her head—casual) tries to take over, is impressive. The internal battle between her resolve and the basilisk's influence keeps things tense. Lei Zhang’s this doctor who’s got a lot of baggage, mostly survivor's guilt from Titan where he was the only one to survive the basilisk’s attack. He’s got this device, the RD, on his wrist that’s basically a constant drip of meds to keep him from spiraling, so he's always grounded and stable. Despite all that, he’s super dependable, always pulling his weight, and never a burden. As the story goes on, you see him getting really protective of Petrova – like, he doesn’t want to hurt anyone, but if Petrova’s in danger, he’s ready to do whatever it takes. It’s clear he cares about her like family, which makes their bond even more compelling. And my favorite character? Rapscallion. It's a robot, but it's got all these toggled human emotions and is just so lovable. I was constantly hoping nothing bad would happen to it. And then there's Sam Parker, who technically died in Book 1 but is back as a holographic AI with all the original Sam's memories and personality. Sam's devotion to Petrova is oddly heartwarming for something that's technically not a person. The world-building is eerie and effective, especially with those haunting descriptions of revenants digging until they drop dead—and then getting back up to keep digging. One line where a colonist says, "Kill me so I can get back to work," gave me legit chills. Final verdict? Absolutely recommend this to sci-fi and horror lovers. It’s creepy, action-packed, and downright addictive. I just hope David Wellington releases the final book soon because waiting is going to be tough!”
Surprised Face with Open Mouth“I really enjoyed this book as the second in the Red Space Trilogy, it picked up really quickly and kept me entertained, I didn’t even realise how long I was reading for as I was so immersed in the world. All the characters go through growth and change, and we see the mental battles they fight alongside the physical ones. There are a few twists in this book that are a bit predictable, but some that catch your attention as soon as the truth is revealed. Very gripping and easy to read, one of my favourite sci-fi books so far.”
