“4.5 stars Plot spoilers ahead. Read at your own risk. This was a spectacular Harlequin Presents debut by Kali Anthony. It impressed me beyond anything I would have thought it would have been. It surprised me that this was a debut because I felt while reading this that Kali Anthony had been writing for Presents for years upon years. It just fit in so well with this line while giving me a little bit more on top of that. It had so many great elements that I love from Presents and combined them in a way that felt fresh and new and exciting. First off this felt different from any Harlequin Presents books that I have ever read before, and not in bad way, but in an interesting and fun way that made me sucked in, which I really loved. It had a serious mafia vibe of story that I felt while reading it that added that dangerous, suspense, and just excitement level to the story that made me very intrigued by the story. It gave me a little bit of an adrenaline rush and got my heart pumping that made me invested in the story with Thea trying to escape from her new husband, Christos, who she believed would be her jailer much like her dad had been her whole her life. Her dad was the one who arranged the marriage to Christos so she believed they were the same type of men. I could feel the urgency of her as she tried to escape from this life that she hadn’t chosen for herself. And I could tell how frantic she was to get away especially as she set everything in motion. On her motorcycle no less, which I thought was really cool because I don’t think I have ever read a Presents that had a motorcycle in it. That really gave her an edge to me and made me feel she she was this bad ass chick to me that I loved. But her plan exploded as Christos caught her and stopped her mid-escape. When he came onto the page, he was larger than life that seriously gave off some serious mafia vibe to him, even though that wasn’t what he was, but that was how I felt. So, then there was this dangerous element of this mystery, hulking presence and not knowing what he was going to do or how the was going to handle the situation with Thea, but one thing was for sure he wasn’t happy with her, and thus started the battle of wills in their tense relationship. Their relationship was all types of entertaining as they set about pushing each other’s buttons without giving an inch. It was clear they didn’t trust each other, yet the needed this marriage for reason’s of the their own that they wouldn’t reveal to each other. But Christos made one thing clear and that was they needed to stay married and for awhile until his father passed away. Thea was determined to fight him tooth and nail until she couldn’t anymore, but I liked that she didn’t back down, stood up to him, and didn’t take his crap. I just loved how willful she was in the bedroom after she tried to escape and refused to share a bed with him even though he insisted they share a room together. It was just great after their confrontation in the beginning. They had so many more good banter scenes going on between the two of them in that scene. What I really adored though was the growth and transformation of their romance. It took awhile for them to get to the place where they even trusted one another or opened up to one another of all their scars. What I appreciated about that was seeing that journey that they took together to get to that point. There was a lot of banter and struggle between them as they fought against one another because of that lack of trust between them. Even though they had a bit of rapport between them, it wasn’t exactly friendly. They were antagonist towards each other for quite awhile in the story, and I really liked that because it showed how far them come from beginning to end. All the ups and downs that they had to get through before they could get their happily ever. Plus it was nice to see the build up between them as the attraction grew between them, but also their feelings for one another. The more time they spent with one another then the more the fell for one another and trust one each other and just build relationship together because they began to understand one another. I loved that part of their story. It was quite an emotional story especially when I found out what they went through in their childhoods and how it effected them throughout the story. it was heavy stuff and heavy issues going on. It made for a very intense and emotional read at what they both suffered. But what was great was when they built that great trust between them, then they could help each other and help one another as they took comfort in each other. I thought that was just a beautiful part of the story. It brought them closer together and made them more intimate with another, which I love seeing in romance stories. That’s a big part of why I read them in the first place. I want that satisfying emotional journey and that was what I got with Thea and Christos’s journeys. Again I love that. One of my favorite scenes in the book was the moment where Thea showed off all of her tattoos to Christos and the meaning behind each of them was after she had survived something painful. It was a very emotional and intense scene and definitely the turning point in their relationship because Christos finally understood all the abuse that she had survived at the hands of her father and brother. He understood where he pain, sorrow, and hurt come from and why she didn’t trust people. I could feel his transformation there and really really get it. And it was very clear that his feelings were coming into play after that. He wanted to take care of her and cherish her and make her happy. It was such a beautiful and compelling moment that I fell in love with. Another great scene was right before the party scene, and he gave her this red dress (because he learned early on that red was her favorite color) that showed off her back and her tattoos that were on her back. He really wanted her to show them off like they were a bandage of armor and not hide them away like she hid her pain for all those years. He wanted to show off that she was a survivor that she was. He just wanted to make her feel good about herself, which I thought was so sweet, and I was so touched reading that. It was very clear that he did that out of caring for her. He just wanted to pamper her and make her feel beautiful. It was such a great moment. Even though he wanted her, he vowed not to sleep with her because he thought he took too much from her. So, it was a big moment in their relationship when she initiated the love scene because it was what she wanted. She wanted that closeness with him. She wanted that intimacy, caring and affection that he was providing. She wanted him and after wanting him for so long she gave into her desires for him. It was clear that this was for her, and it was more than just them pleasuring theirs bodies. It was about sharing their souls. What I loved about that scene was that because it was her first time that everything didn’t turn spectacular at first, but with his patience, kindness, and caring that he became mind blowing. He was very sweet and loving once he found out and set about bringing her joy and pleasure. He made it all about her. It showed how much he cared about her, and I loved that. The same could be said for subsequent love scenes as well. They were very much based on emotion between them. It was never just physical between them. And the big reason that was because they had gotten to know each other over the course of the book and understood each other before they hit the sheets, which made it more special and a whole lot satisfying because it wasn’t just two strangers slaking their passions for one another. This was more than that. Don’t get me wrong it was passionate, steamy, and hot, but it was also very powerful and meaningful between them because they had all that time to develop their relationship beforehand. I love those types of love stories because it just made it all the satisfying in the end with that love scene being that payoff that I had been waiting for over the course of the book. That was spot on for me. Christos and Thea were just so good together. It has been a long time since I have seen a couple compliment each other in such a way. It was clear that they belonged together. It was clear that they cared and loved each other. I loved they had affection and intimacy between them once they let their guards down for one another and trust each other. They were just that couple that just work on so many levels that they really couldn’t be with anyone else. The love story was just utterly amazing, and I love them together so much. I could gush about them forever. And speaking gushing, I could gush over Christos night and day. He was very swoon worthy. He touched my heart multiple times, mainly when he was being supportive and caring towards Thea. I loved how affectionate he was with her and wasn’t afraid to show it once he saw those tattoos and saw what the meant. I loved seeing the lengths he was willing to go for her (and she did as well) and show how much he cared. He was just really sweet and really tender, which i loved about him. I loved how he put her first. I loved when he bought her the dress and so many other things. And my heart hurt for him over his parent’s rejection and just what that did to him and how badly in scarred him, which was why he didn’t believe in love. He was just utterly adorable, and I loved him so much. Overall I utterly adored this book. I was hooked that fast paced, adrenaline rush beginning that really sucked me into the action. It just jumped right in and just took off, not stopping for single second. I loved the that. It just brought so much interest and intrigue to in for me and felt different from typical Harlequin Presents story that do more setup first then action. But this had action plus setup and was really well done. My investment in the characters was pretty much immediate as they navigated this new married relationship. I loved how they bounced off of each other. I loved how the sparred and banter with each of them not giving an inch thus creating tension and mistrust between them. They just had some really good moments together as they sparked. It was great to see their relationship grow and develop over the course of the story with nice steady build that it was easy to see the changes in their relationship. It was subtle, but I could tell it was building nicely. But then once that big tattoo moment came, then that was when their really relationship really shifted and the caring and trust came really into focus. I loved seeing all the affection that they had for each other, and how they were building great intimacy between them both physically and emotionally. I adored the the emotional intimacy came first then the physical because that just made the physical so much more satisfying because they had that emotional base already. I loved support that they had for each other. How they helped each other heal. And just so many more things that made their relationship really great, making their romance all the more satisfying. I could go on and on about this book. I just loved this book so, so much. I will be rereading again for sure. This was a great start for Kali Anthony, if her other books are going to be like this one then I am sold with her and it makes me hope that she does continue to write for this line for years and years because this was so good. She has something special here. And I think she’s going to become a new author of mine in the Present line. Bravo.”
