“I’ll have to say, this is a fun futuristic read. Plus, there’s a touch of romance! Oh-la-la! This is the first book in the series. The story follows Sierra, a 16-year-old, who lives in the year 2163, and whose father travels to the planet Vortex. Time passes and she decides, illegally, to go retrieve him and bring him back home. Hansen describes Sierra but it turns out that none of her background and skills are needed for the rest of the book. As the story continues, problems arise, and solutions need to be found. How can a 16-year-old go against a cruel and corrupt government? How will she be able to get her father back home safely? But don’t let the story line deceive you. The story is good as is the world building. The plot was fast paced but engaging. I kept wondering what was going to happen after this and how this was going to affect that. The world building was simple but nice and the characters were written well. I enjoyed how easily it flowed (until the end but I hope that the second book clears this up). One thing I would like to point out, would be that the ending seemed kind of rushed. Without really spoiling the ending, let’s just say that the way it told is what causes the “downfall.” I felt like it wasn’t planned out well but still think this book is worth the read. If you like YA novels and/or sci-fi books, I think you’ll like this one! I received an advance review copy and I am leaving this review voluntarily.”
“A YA Sci-Fi Story With A Bit of Romance! This was a little confusing and slow going, but I did enjoy the storyline a lot! The ending was a bit rushed and confusing, but book two will probably clear things up. I really enjoyed the characters in this story a lot. I look forward to seeing where they end up in the next book. If you enjoy YA SCI-FI books, then you should definitely give this one a try!!”
“[4.5] If you know me and my reading habits, you know I tend to struggle with science fiction a lot. However, I adored this book; so that should say something about it! I actually finished this in less than four hours, actually, compared to my usual week or so spent on sci-fi books. I loved the author's writing style. It was so engaging and made this book so easy to get lost in. There were several times I forgot what I was supposed to be doing because I decided to pick the book up and just lost myself in it. Everything was just very well written as well; I loved the characters in this one! I can't wait to read the next book in the series. It's definitely on track to being one of my favorite series of all time!”
“Epic Sci-fi! Reading the title, I thought I was going to be reading a story about robots or AI with some human element. What I got was a story full of intrigue and a young girl, Sierra, trying to deal with life. Her dad goes missing and she is trying to save animals from becoming test subjects. Eventually, she ends up finding her dad only to discover he has been busy with his own load of saving. This empowers her to do more while also discovering just how corrupt the world really is. I found this to be a sort of coming-of-age novel. I loved Sierra and how she learns to handle certain aspects of a situation. Her viewpoint is not narrowed down to animals, but now the lives of humans are at stake and she wants to protect not just friends and family, but everyone. I cannot wait for the next book in the series! I want to see where Sierra goes next and what she will do. Great read!”
