Remembrance

By Mary Monroe
Remembrance by Mary Monroe digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

For a mother mired in midlife, Christmas brings a chance for renewal and rediscovery in this moving novel from the New York Times bestselling author.

For Beatrice Powell, the holidays are usually an extra-special time to celebrate. With her twenty-year-plus marriage, beautiful home, and three wonderful adult children, she has everything she could desire. But change-of-life doubts are making Beatrice a stranger to herself and her bewildered family. She only finds peace volunteering at the local soup kitchen, especially helping out homeless Charles Davenport. And his sensitivity and honesty soon comfort her in ways she never imagined . . .

Charles thought he had it all—until a devastating betrayal and the shattering loss of his family drove him to living on the streets. Beatrice is the first person who's truly cared about him in a long time. And little by little, he's finding reasons to care about rebuilding his life—and risking a sudden, courageous choice . . .

Drawn to Charles and the temptation of a second chance, Beatrice is faced with the hardest of decisions. But his insight, secrets—and the reminder of a profound past encounter—will give her unexpected inspiration, gratitude, and the strength she needs to find her way . . . perhaps in time for Christmas.

“The holidays can bring the kind of chaos, good and bad, that occupies your brain. It's easy to forget to bring your gratitude. Remembrance has that covered . . . an excellent choice if your book group wants to squeeze in a before-the-holidays pick.” —The Washington Informer

Slightly Smiling Face“Discussion Questions Answered: 1. I do agree with Eric when he advised Beatrice to talk to a professional. 2. Yes, I do think Beatrice’s occasional depression was directly related to the accident she had almost died in when she was a teenager. 3. Yes, I do think not knowing the identity of the mysterious young man who had saved her life contributed to her depression each year on the anniversary of her accident. 4. Aggressive people like Beatrice should be handled with straightforwardness. A lot of the time they aren’t aware of their actions. How they take it may be off putting, but self awareness is needed. 5. Not saying anything only makes things worse. Communication is key. 6. If I had a fairly wealthy husband like Beatrice and he didn’t mind, I would be compassionate enough to work full time at a soup kitchen but not entirely for free. 7. I think Beatrice made an exception when she met Charles Davenport because she was bored in her marriage and he was fairly attractive. 8. No, I wasn’t suspicious of Charles’s motives when he first approached Beatrice and kept showing up at the deli where she took some of her breaks. 9. Yes, I think Beatrice was sending Charles the wrong message by being so friendly and spending so much time chat with him at the deli. 10. No, I wasn’t stunned when Charles revealed himself as the man who had saved her life 25 years ago. 11. Yes, I had already guess who Charles was before he told Beatrice. 12. Yes, I was surprised she was pregnant and not going through menopause. 13. I think Beatrice should have given Charles more time to adjust to his new life before sending him a massage/friend request on Facebook. 14. No, Beatrice shouldn’t have reached out to Charles at all.”
