“Strange. Confusing. Inspiring.
I'll be honest, I was confused when I started Record of a Night Too Brief by Hiromi Kawakami, translated by Lucy North. It's three sections, and the opening story is actually 19 short vignettes that feel like different dreams inside the same night. In the next story, "Missing," there's a family whose members occasionally just vanish, and there were moments where I couldn't help but laugh. The final story is about people who let snakes into their lives until you can't tell where the ordinary ends and the snakes begin. Hiromi's creativity is pretty inspiring really, especially in that snake story, I was trying so hard to figure out the meaning behind it all and never quite got there. Worth the read.”
About Hiromi Kawakami
Hiromi Kawakami was born in Tokyo in 1958. She has written numerous novels and collections of short stories, including Strange Weather in Tokyo and The Nakano Thrift Shop. She has been awarded the Akutagawa Prize and the Tanizaki Prize, and was shortlisted for the 2013 Man Asian Literary Prize and the 2014 Independent Foreign Fiction Prize. Her work has been published in more than twenty languages.
