Publisher Description

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

One of our greatest novelists and thinkers presents a radiant, thrilling interpretation of the book of Genesis.

For generations, the book of Genesis has been treated by scholars as a collection of documents by various hands, expressing different factional interests, with borrowings from other ancient literatures that mark the text as derivative. In other words, academic interpretation of Genesis has centered on the question of its basic coherency, just as fundamentalist interpretation has centered on the question of the appropriateness of reading it as literally true.

Both of these approaches preclude an appreciation of its greatness as literature, its rich articulation and exploration of themes that resonate through the whole of Scripture. Marilynne Robinson’s Reading Genesis, which includes the full text of the King James Version of the book, is a powerful consideration of the profound meanings and promise of God’s enduring covenant with humanity. This magisterial book radiates gratitude for the constancy and benevolence of God’s abiding faith in Creation.

Beaming Face with Smiling Eyes“This was the first Christian book I have read since becoming more involved with my religion. Having already read Genesis, reading this book helped me contextualise several stories in the 1st book of the Bible (which I loved). There were definitely a lot of thought-provoking concepts that the author beautifully conveyed that highlight human nature vs God’s nature within Genesis. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to be marvelled by the grace of God 🙆🏽‍♀️💕”
Thinking Face“I began this book with little knowledge of its format or structure. Additionally, this was my first foray into theology beyond church. Coming from this place, Reading Genesis was an intimidating, but rewarding, read. Marilynne Robinson outlines the book of Genesis in a semi-chronological order which can be hard to follow at first, but that one adapts to with time. The lack of breaks or chapters at first presented a challenge but made sense considering the essay-like approach of this piece. I wish that more verse numbers were included throughout, as I found the most value when I was able to move back and forth between the essay and scripture. I’d absolutely recommend this as an initial experience with Christian scriptural analysis.”
