Quantum Night

By Robert J. Sawyer
Quantum Night by Robert J. Sawyer digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

With such compelling and provocative novels as Red Planet Blues, FlashForward and The WWW Trilogy, Robert J. Sawyer has proven himself to be “a writer of boundless confidence and bold scientific extrapolation” (New York Times). Now, the Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author explores the thin line between good and evil that every human being is capable of crossing…

Experimental psychologist Jim Marchuk has developed a flawless technique for identifying the previously undetected psychopaths lurking everywhere in society. But while being cross-examined about his breakthrough in court, Jim is shocked to discover that he has lost his memories of six months of his life from twenty years previously—a dark time during which he himself committed heinous acts.

Jim is reunited with Kayla Huron, his forgotten girlfriend from his lost period and now a quantum physicist who has made a stunning discovery about the nature of human consciousness. As a rising tide of violence and hate sweeps across the globe, the psychologist and the physicist combine forces in a race against time to see if they can do the impossible—change human nature—before the entire world descends into darkness.

“Robert Sawyer’s book takes you into an intricate universe of consciousness seen through the lens of quantum physics. Jim Marchuk, a Canadian Psychologist, is brought in as an external advisor to defend a criminal. His defense being that psychopathy is not determined by an individual’s choice but by the quantum make-up in their brains. Essentially, psychopaths can’t help but be how they are. Yet during the trial, the prosecution brings up secrets from Marchuk’s life that he had no memory. Shocked by this revelation, he dives into a fascinating journey into the secrets of his own mind, and into the mysteries of consciousness. While the premise of Quantum Night may seem New-Agey, juxtaposing two relatively abstract concepts into one, it is surprisingly lucid. Sawyer quickly establishes the narrative through real-world research reinforced with philosophical thought experiments that lend credence to the story. Even though his idea makes human beings into hapless individuals with little choice about their inherent personalities, you believe him. His categories of Q1 (philosophical zombies), Q2 (psychopaths) and Q3 (consciousness with conscience) might just rewire your outlook towards society. Sawyer’s book is fast-paced and highly unpredictable, interspersed with moments that you would not see coming. His idea of how Quantum Physics has far reaching implications into consciousness, is a fascinating one. While the rules in this world may seem deliciously whacky, you get sucked into the implications and start chalking out scenarios in your head on how the characters would solve a certain problem. This one’s one of the best sci-fi pageturners I have read in a while.”
