“A very unusual book, with some great writing, a clear goal and complicated characters - but the plot wasn't always engaging. The middle section of the novel was slower than the rest, and it was a shame that both the main relationships of the book went in a very similar direction as things progressed. Some people have seen one main character as a self-insert from the author, and it's hard to deny that once you research their other work and background. I did like the fact that the gay haven of Berlin still had to deal with prejudice and discrimination, which is a very honest way to do the world-building.”
